About the model
Cairn G is the best preserved tomb of the Carrowkeel passage tomb cemetery on the Bricklieve Mountains, Co. Sligo, at 290 m on the north end of Carrowkeel Mountain. A limestone cairn 18-21 m across and 3 m high (Macalister: 21 ft) covers a short cruciform tomb opening to the NW: a 2 m passage closed by a stone door slab, a central chamber 1.7 x 1.9 m and 2.3 m high roofed by lintels and oversailing corbels under a large flat slab, and three small cells behind high sills. Above the lintel of the entrance is a slot, the 'roof-box', through which the setting sun shines into the chamber for weeks either side of the summer solstice. Opened intact in April 1911 by Macalister, Armstrong and Praeger; burials there date to the Middle-Late Neolithic (c. 3450-2800 cal BC for the cemetery). Bog covers the base; one kerbstone is visible. Not reconstructed: the roof is original.
