The oldest things of the isles that are not buildings or places: recipes and cookery books, manuscripts and letters, songs and instruments, laws and maps, games and the rules of sports, customs still kept, everyday objects and the first photographs. Each claim is researched with its sources and the exact words they use, checked by script; many "oldest" claims are disputed, and each entry says how well its claim stands.
